About
Guamanchi Expeditions is the creation of John Peña. John worked for the mountain rescue services of Mérida when adventure tourism was undeveloped. Mountains were his passion, and so this seemed like a good excuse to visit them often! But soon John was restless for adventure, and moved to the Ecuadorian village of Baños, near Quito, where tourism was more developed. Between 1987 and 1989 he worked as a mountain guide for 2 different companies, and observed first-hand how to run a small outdoor adventure company. John decided then that he didn't want to work for anyone else but himself, and set his heart on opening his own guiding business in Mérida. John knew the mountains of Mérida like the back of his hand, but his English was not good. Determined to better himself, John took off to USA and Canada to improve his second language before returning to Mérida in 1990. Guamanchi Expeditions was born in September 1990, one of the first of its kind in town. "Guamanchi" means "Our Eagle" in Quitchua - a language of the indians of Ecuador. Initially, John was doing all the guiding himself. But it quickly became apparent that demand for his services was outstripping supply, and this quickly led to the employment of additional staff in the areas of sales, mountain guiding, paragliding pilots, drivers, etc. Today, Guamanchi Expeditions is never closed! We open every day from 7:30am to 7:30 pm, every day of the year. We are licensed Venezuelan operators for "viaje y turismo" (travel and tourism) and for "transporte" (tourism transport). The aims of Guamanchi Expeditions are, and remain: - Excellence of service. |
